"Away from Port" 2009 | Oil on Canvas Panel | Size = 12" X 9"

It has been my constant goal to depict sunlight and night illumination with bold, strong brushstrokes as I attempt to visually capture a scene honestly with color, value and composition. I believe that every scene has a unique beauty and a compelling work can be created for even the most mundane.

It has been my experience that I learn best by doing and painting, whether plein air or in the studio using a plein air study or multiple reference images on which I find myself relying less and less, gleaning only the basic form and general information that reference shots can provide. By adding color, pushing composition.

And most importantly using imagination I attempt to create drama which I hope gives way to a compelling piece.

It is not necessary to travel long distances for idyllic, perfect settings to optimize inspiration; shadows cast on a building, reflections on wet sand, street lights on the wharf, say more than Tuscan valley or a Parisian street. Most important for me are the technique, purity of brushwork and composition saying as much as possible with the least amount of brushstrokes to create vibrancy and drama.

This canvas was made specially for the 140hours auction!
