In Germany, people have this strange habit of carrying umbrellas when it snows. I hear from my friends in other countries that it is rarely the case and people generally use only a hat. However, it is very common here to spot myriad hues of bright umbrellas when there is snowfall.

In early 2009, when we had heavy snow here, it was my first experience of snow and I loved the contrast of people’s cheerful umbrellas and colorful jackets against the backdrop of a much muted landscape. It was this contrast that I aimed to capture through a series of paintings titled “Winter Series 2009”. This painting is one of them.
